What the $200 Million Crown Melbourne Redevelopment Means for Group Stays

Crown Resorts announced a $200 million redevelopment of the Southbank complex on 22 February 2026. For trip organisers planning stays between 2026 and 2028, the project brings new event spaces, dining additions, and a major refresh to live performance venues. Here is what is officially announced, when the changes arrive, and how to manage a group during the staged works.

The Scope of the $200 Million Southbank Overhaul

When we manage group stays at Southbank, understanding site works and upcoming venue launches helps us guide room placement and dinner arrangements. On 22 February 2026, Crown Resorts published details of a $200 million redevelopment covering Crown Melbourne. The plan encompasses more than 15 new restaurants, bars, and casual eateries, alongside a major revitalisation of the Yarra Riverwalk interface. Construction is projected to generate approximately 2,000 jobs, with complex-wide carbon emissions targeted for a 23 per cent reduction by 2027.

Rather than closing facilities all at once, the resort is staging openings from mid-2026 through to 2028. For groups booking accommodation across the complex's over 1,600 rooms, daily hotel operations, lobby check-in desks, and main thoroughfares remain open. However, specific dining rooms, bar spaces, and entertainment zones will transition through refurbishment phases over the next two years.

Staged Opening Dates: Venues Coming Between 2026 and 2028

Organisers planning dinners or evening events around a stay should note the official timeline published by the resort:

  • May 2026: Crown Metropol's 28th floor debuts as an exclusive private events destination.
  • November 2026: The Palms venue completes its transformation into Crown LIVE (also referred to as Crown Live Theatre) on Level 3 of the West End, featuring seating for up to 1,250 guests.
  • November 2026: Bellevue Bar & Terrace, a riverfront gastropub featuring elevated pub classics, opens along the Riverwalk.
  • Early 2027: The transformed Crown Towers lobby bar reopens following refurbishment.
  • March 2027: Mott 32, offering modern Cantonese dining, opens its doors.
  • Mid-2027: Victor Churchill brings a butchery-focused bar and grill experience to the complex.
  • 2027: Brunetti Oro joins the Riverwalk precinct as an Italian café.
  • Early 2028: Amaya Modern Mexican opens at the west end of the Riverwalk, alongside Barbershop Cuts & Cocktails.

These upcoming arrivals join recent dining additions such as Marmont and Kolkata Cricket Club. If you are organising group dinners ahead of these dates, view our guide to dining for groups to check currently operating venues like Bistro Guillaume, Conservatory, and Nobu.

Changes to Hotel Towers and Event Spaces

Each of the three hotels in the complex experiences different updates under the announcement:

Crown Metropol Melbourne

The 28th floor of Crown Metropol transitions in May 2026 into a dedicated private events space. For groups reviewing the three hotels compared, this adds a high-level function venue directly above Metropol's 658 guest rooms. The 27th-floor indoor pool and gym remain in service.

Crown Towers Melbourne

Crown Towers' ground-floor lobby bar is undergoing a complete transformation, scheduled to reopen in early 2027. Guest check-in for the 481 rooms and villas, access to the Level 3 split-level gym, 25-metre indoor pool, and Crown Spa treatments operate as normal. Crystal Club access on the higher levels remains unaffected.

Crown Promenade Melbourne

Crown Promenade's 465 guest rooms and 7,350 square metres of combined event space at the Crown Conference Centre continue to support large corporate contingents. Note that Promenade's indoor pool and gym have scheduled maintenance closures posted periodically; when closed, registered guests are directed to the pool facilities at Crown Towers or Crown Metropol.

For show nights and corporate functions, theatre and event spaces like the pillarless Palladium ballroom (accommodating up to 1,500 seated or 2,500 standing guests) remain the complex's primary large-capacity assembly points alongside the incoming 1,250-seat Crown LIVE venue.

Practical Checklist for Group Organisers

When coordinating ten or more rooms during a redevelopment period, follow these dry steps to keep your itinerary running smoothly:

  1. Match stay dates to venue launches: If your group wants to attend live shows at Crown LIVE or host a private function on Metropol's 28th floor, verify your travel dates align with the published November 2026 or May 2026 launch windows.
  2. Confirm dining capacity early: Because several new Riverwalk eateries open progressively through 2027 and 2028, secure large-table reservations at established venues early through the resort's dining desk (+61 3 9292 5777).
  3. Inform your group about lobby works: Let guests staying at Crown Towers know that lobby bar refurbishments are underway until early 2027, though main check-in desks and concierges operate uninterrupted.
  4. Review rooming lists and arrival times: Read how group bookings work to ensure your central contact submits rooming lists and check-in preferences at least two weeks before arrival.

Please note that physical casino entry on site remains restricted to adults aged 18 and over, governed by the VGCCC. Mandatory player cards are required for electronic gaming, with confidential support available 24/7 from Gambler's Help on 1800 858 858.
